School of the Americas Watch May Day Statement

Today SOA Watch joins in solidarity with the working communities around the world resisting with dignity against large corporate and political interests that place profit over human lives and justice. Today we remember all those who died fighting against international labor exploitation, as well as those who keep the struggle alive. Today we join the voices that demand an end to the criminalization of social movements and people of color, that demand an end to raids and deportations, that call for active solidarity without borders.

Today we cannot forget that US intervention in Latin America seeks to protect foreign capital that benefits from the exploitation of local communities. Social injustice is therefore the result of colonization and State accomplices, loyal to their duties in the system of global capitalism. Today we demand respect for the dignity and self-determination of the peoples of the Americas.

Today we continue challenging labor exploitation that is fueled by capitalism, patriarchy, and racism. Today we denounce the training of Latin American security forces by the United States, by the School of the Americas/WHINSEC, and reject the militarization of our communities that only benefits transnational capital. United, we can protect our land, our resources, and those actively on the front lines of resistance.

For some communities in the Americas, May 1st marks the celebration of spring: it was the traditional time to plant new seeds in the old soil. May the seeds of our resistance be the ones that grow and nourish the struggles of our sisters and brothers around the world. Let us not forget that the rights we have today are the result of grassroots communities’ resistance. Let us honor the memory of those who fought to create a more just world.

Not one step back!
